Memory Foam ProductsYou may have noticed that there is a huge price difference in memory foam products. This is because all products are not created the same and for the most part you get what you pay for. One very important thing to look for when buying memory foam products is the density. The higher the density, the higher the cost, the better the product. Memory foam was first developed for NASA in the 1970's. Tempur-Pedic® created their own version of memory foam called Tempur® for use in the medical field. This led to the discovery that patients were sleeping better and had less pain in the mornings. Tempur-Pedic then decided to venture into the consumer market with their products. Since Tempur® foam was created for the medical market it was and still is very expensive. Other manufacturers decided to create their own, lower cost version of memory foam just for consumers. Foamex and Carpenter are several of the many new manufacturers. So what should you look for when buying a memory foam mattress topper? If you are 200 lbs or under a 2" thick topper should be fine. If you are over 200 lbs try a 3" topper. Make sure the density is a 3 or higher. Unfortunately this info is often left out of advertisements. I guess we aren't supposed to know what we are buying. Tempur-Pedic has a 5.35 density. This measurement is calculated by weighing a cubic foot of material. Higher density foam will give you greater durability and enhanced temperature sensitivity. If you can afford the Tempur-Pedic go for it! If not, look for a mid-priced quality alternative. I purchased the NovaForm Imperial Topper which is a 2" thick topper and has a density of 3. It also comes with a Teflon coated cover.
I found this interesting discussion from people who own memory foam pillows and mattress toppers. Click here to read. There are over 50 pages of posts and the strange thing is, this a computer forum. But I guess people who use computers a lot have lots of aches and pains. At any rate you no doubt will find lots of useful information.
